Development of the digestive system in larvae of the Neotropical fish Prochilodus argenteus (Characiformes, Prochilodontidae) Animal Sciences
Santos, Alcione Eneida; Pedreira, Marcelo Mattos; Santos, Thais Garcia; Moura, Guilherme de Souza; Santos, José Claudio Epaminondas dos; Silva, Robson Campos.
The development of the digestive system in larvae of the Neotropical fish P. argenteus was analyzed histologically. On the 3rd day after hatching, the digestive system comprised oropharyngeal cavity, esophagus and simple undifferentiated tube. Since secreting cells, positive to Alcian Blue (AB), were found in the esophagus, digestive activity in the initial phase had occurred. On the 18 and 28th days after hatching, the esophagus was positive for AB and Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) stain. The stomach was fully differentiated, with the cardiac, fundic and pyloric regions. Different regions of the epithelium were characterized by basic and acidic secreting cells (AB and PAS positive). On the 18 and 28th days after hatching, the intestine was long, coiled and...

Effect of the spatial heterogeneity on the predation of Scinax fuscovarius and Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles by Odonata larvae - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i2.4835 Biological Sciences
Fulan, João Ânderson; Universidade Federal do Amazonas; Almeida, Silvio César; Unesp-Botucatu.
The objective of this work were to analyze the effect of predation by Odonata naiads on two amphibian species with distinct habits – benthic and mid-water – and to verify whether the presence and architecture of macrophytes can mediate this interaction. All tadpoles and Odonata larvae were captured in a temporary pond. Sixteen tanks were used for three different treatments: Pistia, Salvinia and no macrophytes. Ten tadpoles of each species and two Odonata larvae were placed in each tank. The survival of tadpoles according to treatments was assessed through analysis of repeated measures. We concluded that the survival of P. cuvieri and S. fuscovarius tadpoles was not affected by the presence and architecture of the macrophytes (Pistia and Salvinia) or by...

Flooding avoidance Triplaris gardneriana Wedd. (Polygonaceae): growth and morpho-anatomical aspects Biological Sciences
Pontara, Vanessa; Bueno, Marcelo Leandro; Scremin-Dias, Edna.
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of flooding in Triplaris gardneriana Wedd, cultivated in drained soil (control) and in flooded condition. The experiment was developed in a greenhouse, using plants with 90 days after the emergency. The response to treatment was evaluated at 0, 30, 60 and 90 days. Growth measurements were made, such as biomass allocation, relative growth rate (RGR). Adventitious roots were not measured only observed, as well as the development of hypertrophied lenticels. The RGR was continuously reduced along the 90 days in flooding conditions for the roots, stem and leaves, compared to control. The flooding of the substrate caused alterations such as: increasing of the cortex width and diameter of the central cylinder of...

Genetic similarities among four species of the Plectranthus (L’Hér.) genus - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i1.880 Biological Sciences
Bandeira, Juliana Magalhães; UFPel; Bianchi, Valmor João; UFPel; Rubin, Sílvia; UFPel; Peters, José Antonio; UFPel; Braga, Eugenia Jacira Bolacel; UFPel.
The Plectranthus genus comprises several species generally referred to as boldo, which are highly used in popular medicine due to their anti-dyspeptic, analgesic and digestion-stimulating properties. The amount of natural active principles can vary greatly in the related genotypes, which may lead to the inappropriate use of these plants. This work aimed to analyze the interspecific diversity among four species of the Plectranthus genus (P. grandis, P. barbatus, P. neochilus and P. amboinicus) and the intraspecific diversity of P. barbatus collected from different places in southern Brazil, by means of the RAPD technique. A higher genetic similarity was observed between the P. neochilus and P. amboinicus species (80%), followed by P. grandis and P. barbatus...

Growth rhythm of Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae) in the Northern Pantanal Biological Sciences
Machado, Nadja Gomes; Sanches, Luciana; Aquino, Aryadne Márcia; Silva, Ludymilla Barboza da; Novais, Jonathan Willian Zangeski; Biudes, Marcelo Sacardi.
The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, characterized by high biodiversity, but large areas have been invaded by Vochysia divergens, a flood-adapted pioneer and native tree of the riparian forest and Brazilian Savanna. Seasonality in rainfall causes annual rhythms in the tree’s physiology, in which climatic stress factors induce a cambial dormancy in trees and, in consequence, growth zones in the trunk. Current analysis evaluates the seasonal variation of the diameter increase of V. divergens specimens in a seasonal floodable forest of the Northern Brazilian Pantanal. Field sampling was conducted between January and December 2012. Air temperature, relative humidity and precipitation were measured at a micrometeorological station, water level was...

The effect of 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid (picolinic acid) on trypanosomes of the subgenus Schizotrypanum isolated from the bat Phyllostomus hastatus was determined in this study. Picolinic acid, at 50 µg mL-1, inhibited epimastigote growth by 99% after 12 days incubation. In addition, trypomastigote motility decreased by 50% after 6h and completely after 24h in the presence of 50 µg mL-1 picolinic acid. The 50% cytotoxic concentration on HEp-2 cell line was 275 µg mL-1 after 4 days incubation. Altogether, these results indicate higher toxicity against trypanosomes. The inhibitory effect of picolinic acid on epimastigote growth can be partially reversed by nicotinic acid and L-tryptophan, suggesting a competitive inhibition....

Production of xylanases by an Aspergillus niger strain in wastes grain Biological Sciences
Izidoro, Simone Cristine; Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste; Knob, Adriana; Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste.
Many fungi are used in order to extract products from their metabolism through bioprocesses capable of minimizing adverse effects caused by agro-industrial wastes in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the xylanase production by an Aspergillus niger strain, using agro-industrial wastes as substrate. Brewer’s spent grain was the best inducer of xylanase activity. Higher levels of xylanase were obtained when the fungus was grown in liquid Vogel medium, pH 5.0, at 30ºC, during 5 days. The temperature for optimum activity was 50ºC and optimum pH 5.0. The enzyme was stable at 50ºC, with a half-life of 240 min. High pH stability was verified from pH 4.5 to 7.0. These characteristics exhibited by A. niger xylanase turn this enzyme attractive...

Use of murinometrics indices and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) in the determination of experimental obesity in oophorectomized rats Biological Sciences
Ferraz, Alex Soares Marreiros; Moraes, Ruan Carlos Macêdo de; Sá, Naiza Arcângela Ribeiro de; Andrade, Francisco Teixeira; Martins, Maria do Carmo de Carvalho e; Ceccatto, Vânia Marilande.
In this study, we tested the use of murinometric indices and bioimpedance (BIA) to determine obesity in rats. Female Wistar rats (8 weeks/130-160 g) were divided into control and oophorectomy group. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and Lee index (LI) were used as anthropometric techniques to determine obesity, and the determination of body composition by BIA, as a way to partition body weight into fat mass and lean mass components. The dissection of muscle tissues and adipose deposits was used as a direct determination of body fat content. The groups had body weight gain (p <0.05) after the trial period, with a differential gain in body fat (p <0.05) observed by the dissection of tissue in the oophorectomy group. This gain in body fat was detected more...
